Hi! How are you doing? No, really. How are you doing? It’s been an interesting start to the year for many and an unusual few weeks for all. I’m praying you’re finding some peace and rest in the slow down and social distancing. We’re only a week into this at our house, but I’ve kind of enjoyed the new pace for now. This was supposed to be our kids’ spring break, so we were prepared for this week to be more calm it hasn’t been as socially fun as we were expecting but I’m not sure what next week will bring.
The weather here has been cloudy and rainy/cold most days, so that’s limited us to mostly indoor activities. We started the week off by cleaning out closets and rooms, and I was pushing to do all of the organizing before we did much else. Then we got the tentative school return date of April 6, and I slowed my roll a bit. We’ve played lots of games, made too many desserts, and created a lot of art to hang in our front windows. A friend’s neighborhood was encouraging art walks: hang art you’ve created in your windows for others to enjoy when they go on walks (one of the activities recommended right now) so we got our neighborhood on board, and it’s been so awesome!
Amidst the slower pace, I managed to freshen up the living room a bit. I wanted it to feel more spring-like and also bring in some texture. We added a house phone earlier this year and I went with a vintage red look (the bat phone, as Micah likes to call it). The pop is so fun! A few weeks ago I picked up this ashtray thrifting. The marble pattern is great, and the camel colored marks from the cigarettes don’t worry, I washed it well inspired the camel pops and more natural elements I brought in throughout. A very weird thing to pull inspiration from but just proof you can be inspired by anything!
I am always a fan of maximizing grocery store flowers – now more than ever! When I went to get some necessities I grabbed several bundles of babies breath. Yes, it is sadly know for feeling dated with roses in corsages and arrangements, but keeping it long and full is really fresh and interesting. The rattan and glass box is from Nell Hills and they should be getting more in they’re great about shipping items and still available via phone to do so. I also found a set of them here. The marble catch all has vintage flashcards in it that will definitely come in handy now that we’ll be working on academics at home.
The coffee table is a mix of neutrals and textures to keep your eye moving throughout the space. Everything is thrifted or no longer available except the large white pottery and the spotted box.
On the bar cabinet I wanted to bring a bit of spring with some new art. I looked through my stash and didn’t have anything with great color. I immediately thought about my John Derian Picture Book and started flipping through. Pre-Corona Gwen would have never done this, but I ended up cutting out one of the pages and popping it into the spotted frame I thrifted a few years ago. A fresh candle from my candle drawer Nell Hills Home scent and some long matches to talk to the red phone on the other side of the room, and I’m calling it spring-y.
Some of you may notice that the layout is different in here too. This room is very tricky to arrange, as it’s very little wall space and mostly doors and windows. Before the holidays I ended up shifting the couch in front of the window wall and put my newly recovered chaise in here. It look so great with the walls. Because it’s about the same color and a lower piece of furniture, it doesn’t visually take up much space and helps your eye move on to the back of the room. The cute little ottoman by the fireplace is a piece I found for $15 at an estate sale last fall and had it redone in a warm, performance burgundy. It plays nicely with the library.
There are some other things I would like to bring in/change in the space if I was getting out and about right now, but it was a fun challenge to use what I already had. An artist who is an Instagram friend sent me some of her landscapes a few weeks ago, and I think a small grouping would make the perfect addition to the room. Laurel sent me more than I need, so I thought I would give one away to you all! Comment below for your chance to win. I love the red background that Laurel paints on, I’ve never seen that done on something like a landscape before! I would use the piece in my bathroom, with a wide mat and a pretty and thin gold antique frame. Gorgeous, Gwen!
I love your living room! It’s inspiring me to try and redecorate with what we have at home. I’m an artist but I’ve had to take a break because of morning sickness. We are spending the days trying to keep our three little kids occupied and deep cleaning the house. Love that painting. We are getting outside alot. Sledding in our backyard on the hill because it is full on winter still at my house. In town it is spring. Cooking everything from scratch and almost making a dent in my pantry.

I’ve been loving following you on insta stories this week! Small reorganizing and refreshing projects are keeping me going right now. I also am making it a point to buy fresh flowers on my grocery store runs. There’s something relaxing about having something natural and beautiful in my house right now….it reminds me that it’s all going to be okay. ❤️

Currently I’m redecorating my husband’s home office which includes scraping and refinishing the ceilings (ugh but I love saving $1.5k) and then repainting and new/vintage-new everything. My paid design work is delayed indefinitely so I need a place to flex my creative and physical muscles.

I stanching is hard for myself since I spend every day on the run with our two kids in different schools and activities. To go from that to staying home is an adjustment but one that is needed. I have decided to deep clean one space daily and to purge our home of items that we do not use regularly. I would say we have mostly been doing art but I am no painter like you Gwen. I’m more smiley faces and random shapes. We do however have an art wall of our kids paintings, school achievements, and crafts on our way out the back door. We display some of my favorite art pieces I have throated as well and if we were blessed with one of these prints it would be a perfect match and if that didn’t work for my first choice, second would be in our master bedroom. I don’t have instagram and have been checking to see if you’ve updated blog and I’m so happy you have! (no guilt or disappointment implied there at all, with kids being home and the crazy circumstances we are all in – just excited to get some much needed inspiration). This was just the inspiration I needed to actually go into my “inventory” and spruce up that way. We are technically still on spring break, so it’s a more subdued version of that. Walks but no library. Backyard but no playgrounds. Just bought a trampoline today though, so excited to put that to use!

I unfortunately have a compromised immune system, so our family has to be extra careful. But, I am enjoying having my husband work from home. I have still been going to work. I work in a long term care facility and our main concern is protecting our residents. We are doing the best we can that way. I have 5 kids in school, who are all trying to do school from home. I am called upon to mediate at times. I wish I could be home with them doing fun and creative projects. We FaceTime my mom next door, who is isolating herself because she is high risk. We are doing well though, and have what we need. I believe I would put the print in my bedroom. I love that red undertone!

I counted stippled dots on your rug, the frame you mention, the box and magnifying glass on the coffee table, and even sort of on the inside of the lampshade and a bookcover also on the coffee table. Then I noticed the same texture on the center of the first mini mountain landscape painting you show. Wow! You have to keep that one!

As a teacher (home for awhile), I’m using the time to “spring-up” my home, check in on little grandsons and elderly mother, read long pushed-aside books, and draw close to the One in whom we trust. I’m an introvert, so social distancing is a little bit easier for me than for some people. I have been spending my time doing some household chores, watercolour painting and cross stitching. I plan on doing a lot of baking and cleaning in the next little bit as well.

I would love an original piece to display, what a treasure! I live in Washington State, so we’ve been following the outbreak pretty closely for a while now. Our small town hasn’t seen a confirmed case yet, but the big reported numbers aren’t far away. I’ve been having a hard time with this, but it is starting to get better. I’ve been separated for the last year and have loved learning to live on my own. This feels different. Like potentially being truly alone forever (irrational, but where my mind went). Other single friends have been feeling similar. We’re connecting and encouraging each other. Just reminding myself this is temporary even though it doesn’t always feel like that!

Wow, the room is beautiful! I loved following along on Instagram as you worked through the room. The Baby’s Breath are just perfect, I may have to pick some up for myself on my next necessities run! I’ve been doing my best to make the most of the situation by playing with the kids, and allowing myself extra rest that I do not usually take for myself. It’s been refreshing! As far as our quarantine, it hasn’t looked too much different from my normal hermit lifestyle. But we have 4 kids so that’s been a bit challenging! Trying to slow down and stay grateful for the safety we have in our choice and ability to stay home during this time. We have also been working on our basement, which flooded a few weeks ago. Perfect timing! Ha

As for social distancing, I just finished a 24 hour shift in the hospital…it’s an uneasy time for sure but we will keep showing up for our patients. Even though it’s boring and scary and weird and not what anyone planned for, please everyone keep up your social distance so we can get through this virus!
Her art is beautiful! We’ve been trying to cook and bake more, play games together as a family on the weekends. Weekdays I still have to work (healthcare), although like another reader noted above, work is anything but normal. It makes my husband working from home with our two young kids very challenging as they still need to be entertained and cared for. But they understand why I still have to go to work. Mom guilt has never been stronger! It’s definitely been a challenging time for everyone! Thank you for sharing about your home-it’s a nice distraction from a generally stressful time.
When searching decor blogs, I stumbled upon yours and blindly just clicked your most recent blog post. We’ve been building (like seriously from the empty space to the ceiling) an office in our basement during the virus shut down. I’ve been thinking about reupholstering our two vintage barrel chairs with a blush/peach velvet and my eyes bugged clean out of my head when I saw yours right there on my computer screen!!! They’re exactly what was in my head and I’m so pumped to make it happen now. 🙂

So, so pretty 🙂 My husband and I have been working on restoring/renovating our guest bedroom and are nearing the finish line. Adding that print would be a great finishing touch to one of the nightstands or dresser!

We’re on day 10 of social distancing, and this weekend was really rough. I’m an introvert, and a natural homebody, but I’m used to spending the majority of my days alone. I really cherish my alone time to recharge my batteries and quiet my mind, as much as I love spending time with my family, I’ve missed that time to myself. Luckily, today was a new day, and I video chatted with some girlfriends, even put some make-up on, and those small things have done wonders for my mental health.
I’ve always thought baby’s breath was underrated because by itself, it’s just so soft and lovely! And it looks beautiful in your living room! I’ve been taking this time to go through cabinets and drawers and pull out the stuff we don’t use so I can donate it. And I love Laurel Dawn’s red underpainting; it really makes the landscape pop!

As widow, empty nester I miss people! I’ve been self isolating for 2+ weeks now – well before the governor of California required it – in order to be able to assist my elderly parents without fear of contamination. I’ve been cleaning closets, reading, painting trim that’s gone too long without, baking, going for walks and catching up on blog reading. I’d love one of this beautiful landscapes to brighten my day!

The landscape is so beautiful and peaceful! My husband is a physician and is finishing up a three month away rotation this week. When he gets back we’re planning on busting out some house projects before having a baby in June! Our two kiddos and I are definitely starting to feel a little stir crazy!

As a dentist and owner of my practice, we are shut down completely. Spending lots of time with my family and also lots of time trying to figure out how we will take care of my other “family”—my staff. These are stressful times!
We moved from Kansas to Texas last Monday. Which may not be the best time for the actual move, but it’s a great time when you think about all the designated time you have to unpack and personalize!

We live in Hong Kong, but I’m currently social distancing in Idaho with my 3 kids. We just entered week 9 of homeschool (since we dealt with the coronavirus 2 months ago in Asia as well) & I’m trying each day to find a little beauty in all this madness. 🤪

I’ve been at home with my 4 kids trying to figure out this online schooling and the kids are doing pretty great except the stress of my 1st grader getting through it, it’s going to be a long run. I’ve been working on personal 2019 photo memory books for them all. I’ve done 2 on chatbooks and am now trying my hand at a mixbook one for the rest. It’s been fun and will be an Easter surprise for them. Big fan of all you do Gwen!
Thanks for the break in my day! My husband and I are both working from home with 2 kids. It’s definitely weighing on me but my husband has been able to get some projects done around the house. I would use this print in my office where we are getting ready to put up a gallery wall with a combination of things thrifted, things that mean a lot to us and old and new pictures.
I love the pops of red in that painting! I’d probably have to get to framed and place it on the mantle. I love having a mix of bigger and smaller pieces to layer with little knick knacks up there. And we’re using time at home to clean out things we don’t use and rearrange so it seems like the perfect opportunity to incorporate something new!
What a stunning refresh! You never fail to make everything look so special and thought out. I’ve been taking a queue from you and being more thoughtful of the everyday things that could become mundane and doing something to make it special. All of your content provides a much needed respite from the current world going-ones 💕 Social distancing is such an interesting concept when you live alone (like I do), so I’m attempting to push through the dreariness by giving myself breaks to appreciate the small things and pretty moments. I work at our town’s Clerk’s Office. Since I’m the only one in the office I can still go to work. Our office is needed as we take care of the water, sewer and trash. Our town only has a population of 900.
I’m thankful our church does live streaming. This weeks service reminded me ….I know that I know that He is in control and he watches over me (us).

Love seeing your spring projects and especially your seedling journey! Social media can be a lovely break from the chaos of the world sometimes! I work on a farm and we have been very busy this spring helping bring food and nourishment to our community. And while all of the things going on in the world are confusing, it’s nice to look to the certainty of nature: flowers will bloom, snow will melt, days will become long and the sun will shine, and we’ll continue on this cycle with the seasons (renewal, growth, abundance, dormant/stillness)

Hope you’re all doing well during these crazy times. Thank you so much for your work, which has inspired me to introduce traditional and thrifted elements into my home! I’ve slowly been sprucing up my mudroom/laundry room and that is where I would hang this lovely piece. The colors would play nicely with the green paint on the board and batten and the earth tones in the wallpaper! The pop of red would be fun and unexpected. It would be the last thing I look at before exiting out the back door everyday and no doubt put a smile on my face:)
My family has been hunkering down and taking all of these changes as slowly and mindfully as we can. Thankful my husband and I have jobs that allow us to work from home, and soak up this extra time with our 2 years old son.
I’m so drawn to these landscapes, and the warmth that Laurel can bring to the nature she paints. We bring home art whenever we travel, for work or for pleasure, and now that we’ll be homebound for a while, this would be a great addition to our walls to remember not only this time, but our love for getting out and seeing new things. We have been hunkering here now in Southern Wisconsin for over a week! It’s been hard but I’m finding joy in having more time with my kids and husband, organizing my home, watering my houseplants, creating more art, starting seeds, and cleaning!!!! I love all of your posts and stories…you have a way of elevating anything and everything you do! I love all your recommendations and your style is awesome!!! I was in the midst of a mini makeover in my living room, but with our new shelter-in-place mandate, I’m putting that on hold to focus on our health, new homeschool routine, and working from home. While social distancing I’m loving following along with your living room update. I usually really enjoy your thrifting but sadly not a possibility at the moment. As a family we are getting outdoors as much as possible being sure to keep our distance from others. We do not have a backyard being in an apartment so it has been essential for us. I keep feeling like I want to refresh things, but then it was still cold here last week. Boo. So far, I think I’ve mainly putzed around, without much to show for it. Also, boo. But I did do some touch ups on my daughter’s dresser I’ve been meaning to do. And I sewed a chair’s back cushion, because my kids can’t sit on the seat, I guess. So I’m trying to count the little victories. Remote schooling also started today. I move art around all the time, so most pieces don’t have a permanent home around here. Your posts and presence on Instagram is the fresh, calming balm I need in these crazy times. We are indeed social distancing, and for this extrovert I’m already finding it a struggle. I love the room and the red hits in it. It’s hard to find that balance and you nailed it. And the painting is lovely! We tried our first day of “homeschool” today and it went pretty well, except that when I playfully told my kids they could “Call me Mrs. (our last name)” my son burst into tears and ran to a literal corner. I think quarantine has everyone a little fragile! I’d love to win that beautiful painting as a little spot of sunshine during a tough few weeks.
New follower here. This week I’ve found myself looking around my home, inspecting every nook and cranny, and empty wall space, and wishing there were more original and beautiful and creative things here to speak life to my heart.
I love fun quirky pieces mixed in with traditional pieces. I also started my own bust collection, inspired by yours, which I’ve proudly displayed on our mantle!

We’re hanging in there- feeling a world of mixed emotions. At the same time everything is different and the same. I work remotely from home full time and my husband is flexible. We sent our daughter to my in laws during the week last week, but home this. Will be interesting to see what that does to our productivity- but immensely grateful to be working (and a bit of fomo with others pressing pause).

Your stunning living room has inspired me to do a refresh as well. Currently shopping my house for art and photos to switch out, particularly in my girl’s bathroom. I am a middle school teacher, trying to figure out this “distance teaching” thing (aren’t we all) ,with 3 daughters at home (ages 7,4, and 6 months). We are finding our new normal and adjusting. Trying to stay busy with learning, board games, but relaxing too.

Mostly practicing my social distancing at home on the weekends, since I work in healthcare. Cancer patients still need their treatments and surgeries during this time !
But on the weekends, I’ve been making plans for redoing the landscape in the backyard and it’s nice to spend time outside thinking of the potential of the space.
I would put the lovely landscape in my living room to bring out the green accents of the room while giving it a splash of color with the red !
For a social butterfly- this social distancing has been so challenging. Some days I waste, and others I have been stewarding my time better. I am a new mother and so enjoying our 6 Month old, Violet. What a gift her laughter is at times of silence in our house. I would love to use Laurels landscape in our guest room! I want to make over that room next, and it has our main storage closet in that room, so it’s a room I frequent often so I could enjoy it also! Thanks for sharing your gift with us Gwen! Loving Laurels paintings with the beautiful blue skies. Not sure where I’d hang it, may be the family room? We’ve been keeping busy playing board games, taking family walks at night wearing glow sticks, baking chocolate chips cookies, reading books I’ve waited too long to dive into, and just being together with no to do ‘s or to go’s.
I love your quirky style…and you make it all look so easy! Over here its been rough. All 4 boys home all day, I’m 2 1/2 weeks away from having boy #5 and one of my kids just tested positive for COVid-19. Like is this even real life. Lots of tears today. One of these prints in my nursery might really cheer me up!

Hi! My husband and I (with our 2 dogs) have been sf isolating in our condo since last Thursday, so I think that puts us on day 11? 12? Honestly, I love being at home. I’m an extrovert, but I’m also a homebody. There’s nothing I love more than a weekend with an empty calendar, so this is fueling my desire to be lazy and enjoy my home and company. With that said, thinking about what’s going on outside my 4 walls is causing a lot of anxiety. I’m so sad for the world. That’s really what it boils down to. Hi there—I loved being inspired by your living room refresh post! And thank you so much for introducing me to that fabulous artist (I’ve started following her on instagram). I am trying to keep my head through this shelter-at-home/quarantine time by learning how to homeschool my kids 😬, and sneaking in at-home workouts when possible. Although perhaps the greatest blessing is that we live right next to a huge Park here in San Antonio, and are able to explore all through the trails and fields while still keeping our social distance from others (so grateful to have this outdoor resource to burn off some of my 2 little boys’ energy). I also purchased an adult paint by numbers to try out. I love utilizing my creative side, but I feel creatively exhausted right now, so I’m excited to go through the calming motions of painting without the thought process behind it.

I already WFH, but I love having this extra time with my daughter at home with me, too. We’re slowly working our way through house projects, and spent the weekend cleaning up the yard only for it to snow again! We have a tight-knit group of neighbor-friends and we keep a steady stream of conversation going in our group text – I’ll miss the texts when life goes back to normal! I’d love to put the painting in my office – the green and hint of red go perfectly!
I’ve stayed inside and done lots of cleaning while my husband works out of the home and I’m working remotely with a cat as a co-worker. I have a tiny vanity that I have as my space and I would frame one of the pictures and put it next to where I get ready daily.

Hi Gwen! Hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy. Sending you all well wishes. I’ve spent the last week and a half working on our home. We’ve been renovating it ourselves, top to bottom, for the last 5 years. With full-time jobs and the project being a full gut renovation, it’s been slow going. So one gift of this down time has been us having the time to dedicate to our home. It’s a great creative collaboration between my husband and I. Working on it during this time has helped me to stay sane, and has been a reminder that we can still build and grow, and that there are bright spots ahead for all of us. I’ve also been pulling out cookbooks and all of my favorite design books for inspiration! I’d love to frame this print for a spot in my guest bath, which we’re hoping to finish this week. Soooo, while I’ve been social distancing from home for 10 days now…not counting, but counting…I’m also working from home (one of the lucky ones). This itch everyone has to spend their time refreshing is one I can’t really scratch, because all I’ve lost short-term is my commute. However, our meals are planned in advance and beautifully executed.
Now, this isn’t to say I haven’t my eye on a dot rug slightly similar to yours — and then Jewel Marlowe showed an amazing Hyyge & West wallpaper in her stories that I’m now craving. My style isn’t even close to either of yours, so it would be quite a different look, but that’s what I love about design.

(I mixed my ridiculous hoard of paint samples with leftover white dove and now have a “soothing” pale blue-grey garage.) and I’ve spent more time than usual meal planning and prepping. This week painting the back door and hopefully some hammock time!

I just painted my nasty rental cabinets a deep olive green and this would look sooooooo good on the backsplash!! Have to check out the shop
I’d love to freshen up the office space I now use 9-10 hours a day. Thankful for the room to focus while the kids are playing, but it could use a little brightness!
