Having a pool has really made me consider the pros to relaxing. I am a serial doer. I am the worst at putting the lists down and lounging. But there’s something about the water that makes me set aside the calendar and phone and just be. In an attempt to bring my anxiety down even further I’ve done my best to keep the backyard as clean and neutral as possible. Inside the home I love bold color that makes me feel something. Outside I want to just feel “ahhhh.”
As a mom of littles living a suburban life, I’m not frequenting resorts heck, I don’t know that I can say I’ve ever been to a resort! but that doesn’t mean I can’t create that feel for myself and my guests. With the new deck I was really excited to take advantage of the additional area for sunning. This is the west side of the house and it gets amazing sun all afternoon. People don’t want to necessarily dine or converse in this spot, but getting tan or laying under an umbrella with a good magazine and dipping into the water once in a while is quite the life. Here are some tips for creating an environment that both you and your guests can’t help but relax in.
PROVIDE COMFORTABLE SEATING: Just as you would take careful consideration when selecting a sofa for your living room, you want to make sure your outdoor furniture is comfortable. These Montego chaises from Arhaus are basically small beds. The cushions are so plush, and the white fabric is cool to the touch even on the hottest of days. While the frame reads black, it has more grey undertones that keep it from being scorching in the sun. If you’re lacking the plush factor think about adding in some throw pillows for extra comfort or a lightweight throw on a cooler day.
GIVE SHADE: While loungers are often meant to enjoy the sun, having some shade is always a nice option. I love using an umbrella to shade my face and chest while I let my legs catch some rays. These rectangular umbrellas are a substantial size at 8×11′. Not only are they super functional, they are beautiful open and shut. The height and the way the fabric drapes is really pretty.
A PLACE TO REST YOUR STUFF: If you’re wanting to create an inviting space outside you have to consider the same issues as inside. Your guests want somewhere to put their drink, a place to lay reading material, and somewhere to contain their jewelry and smaller items. Side tables are perfect for this, and a c table is so great for a lounger because you can pull your things right up next to you. Little bowls or baskets on tabletops are the ideal drop spot to corral jewelry and sunglasses.
DON’T FORGET THE GREEN: If your pool has created a concrete jungle for a backyard like mine don’t forget to add some life back in. Potted plants not only bring a great pop of interest to any decor, they add life. Indoors and out.
FRESH TOWELS: Most people will bring their own towel, but it’s nice to have some on hand when someone forgets or a towel ends up in the pool. This big basket is a beautiful way to house extra towels and would be great for blankets by the fire in the fall too.
OFFER A REFRESHING BEVERAGE: Serving something special adds to the fun break from the norm. Even if it’s just some slices of lemon in a sparkling lemonade. Using real glasses and a pretty tray makes it all the more luxurious.
Above all else, remember that your guests will remember how you made them feel more than anything tangible at your get together. Try to have fun and relax yourself!
I’d love to hear any other little tips you have for making your guests feel pampered and rested when you host them! Do you have trouble relaxing, or is it just me? What’s your favorite way to unwind?

It’s stunning. Would having a pool be mandatory on your list if you ever purchased another home? Just trying to consider if it’s worth the expense to have one, lol!

I think it might! We have absolutely loved having one (to my surprise) and I can’t imagine a summer without one now.

Beautiful! Love the white cushions- but are they difficult to keep clean?
[email protected] says
Thank you! I actually think they’re the easiest! So, with white outdoor it has to be in the sun a lot, but then the sun bleaches anything out that might stain. And no worry of fading!
