If you haven’t figured it out or haven’t been around here very long, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and has been since I was little. While I love to have fun with it kid’s parties, costumes, and decor, my personal love as an adult falls somewhere in between the gory and childish. I want things to feel spooky and creepy, but beautiful. This year is definitely one of my favorites, and the way Justin shot it only adds to the spookiness.
When it comes to seasonal decorating, I prefer to focus all of my attention on one area and really pack a punch instead of sprinkling items throughout the house. Two years ago it was the dining room this bone runner DIY is so simple, last year it was the library, and this year we’re back in the dining room. I’m not at a stage in life where hosting adult parties is a thing. If we have people over which we do quite often there’s going to be a lot of kids in tow. But Halloween is all about fantasy, so why can’t decorating for it be fanciful too? This year I decided to decorate the dining room as if I was going to be able to have an adult costume party and dress up anyway – because life is too short for the coulda/woulda’s.

I was inspired by the idea of a somewhat glamorous witch using this room to store her ingredients and create her potions. I covered the buffet in this linen tablecloth to darken things up further in here and scattered curiosities over the top. Mixing natural elements Spanish moss, creepy pieces bones and curiosities, and some pretty candlesticks silver and mercury glass brings a look that has depth and interest. Some of this stuff is store bought, but a lot of it is just random things I’ve picked up at thrift stores and antique malls throughout the year. The mushrooms under the cloche are potpourri that was in a bag at a thrift store, most of the bottles are from flea markets, and you’d be surprised how many bones, skulls, and weird gourds you can buy at your local antique mall for relatively cheap.
My sister has a real knack for all things beauty and did my makeup. Justin rigged up my fog machine with some dry ice and a cooler to create some creepy effects. It was a fun, fanciful day had by all!
