It’s always been Micah’s dream to own a bit more earth, to have a place to sprawl out and feel more free. I was never completely behind the idea until a few years ago, when I started to really enjoy gardening and the thought of more space meant more possibilities. The market for properties of all kinds has been quite crazy this last year, but with patience and a generous Lord, we found a beautiful chunk of land that felt like home and circumstances that made it easy for us to prayerfully consider before putting in an offer.
I wanted to name the land something and have spent a few months now toiling over a long list of descriptive words and plants found on the property. Last week Micah suggested Three Pastures, and it’s perfect. The almost 20 acres is divided into three pastures by tree lines. It’s really what drew me to the land. These trees not only offer privacy from the road and neighboring land, they create distinct rooms on the property that we plan to use for work, home, and play.
We closed on Friday and yesterday my dear friend, Grace, and her kids were in town. Justin and his son, Sully, were here too, and we all headed out to show them the property and had a sunset dinner of our favorite, hometown pizza. The kids had a blast with the freshly cut hay bales and the chance to run off some energy in a way that you just can’t do in our suburban neighborhood.
With material prices where they are, it will be a while until we build anything. We plan to do a barn first and a house several years down the line. I’ve been dreaming and scheming for all sorts of additions that will take us years to realize, and I look forward to sharing more of that with you all now that it’s officially ours! For now we’ll focus on clearing the tree lines of invasive and dead plants, planting new things that can have some time to mature before we make it our home, and digging out two small ponds to make a larger one. I have a lot to learn about country life and how to build a new house that doesn’t look new at all (I’ve been sharing about this part over in Thrift Club!) and can’t wait to take you all along on this process. If you have land, I’d love all the tips and thoughts!

How exciting! I relate to this so much – in January 2020 we bought 5.5 acres outside of Bonner Springs and are having our pole barn built right now (after a year of very slowly planning, talking to the city and county, and trying to get contractors lined up – everything seemed to take forever due to the pandemic!). We whiled away that time planting a few trees – you’re so lucky to have treelines established already! – “mowing” with our new little tractor, and watering the trees we’d just planted. Some nights we’d drive out there just to sit and watch the sun set. The house will be a few years away still, but it’s so much fun already to plan and dream. Excited to watch you on this journey too!

We’ve recently bought land and are in the process of building a house! I’m excited to start gardening as well and have been looking to into permaculture and food forests. I love the idea of mimicking nature and having a low maintenance garden that yields food. If you haven’t researched it yet it is a really awesome concept!

Sounds amazing, congrats to you all!

How wonderful for all of you! I can’t believe how much your children have grown. Take things slowly when it comes to the point that the house is built and you need to plant outside. Give yourself time to see how the sun rises and sets, and which areas of the land close to the house are formed with the tree line. That helped me in planning and creating my garden beds. I own horses so that was more planning as to where to build the barn and put up fencing. Your children will be building upon many memories of your new home and all of the planning and work involved in making a house a home.

Thank you, Lynn, for the kind words and wisdom!

Congratulations! I was born and raised in the country turned city girl. I would suggest watching out for snakes and brown recluse spiders that like the hay bails. We also wore a lot of cowboy boots but I’m from Texas.

Your land is beautiful. How exciting it is to find land and dream up ideas for you and your family! We are in the exact same situation. We found 5 acres and just tagging trees that need to be cut down is fun.
Congratulations on your purchase. Will be following along on your journey.
