*This post is in partnership with KraftMaid, but all thoughts, opinions, and selections are my own.
The cabinets are up, and it’s really starting to feel like a proper laundry room! You can catch up here and here. It may be looking like even more than a laundry room, which is what we need and was the intention from the beginning. From clothes cleaning to dog feeding and grooming, pool supplies to brooms and vacuums, we are asking a lot of this space, and cabinetry can help us maximize the potential.
I always knew that I wanted to use the same KraftMaid cabinets that we had in the kitchen. Three years of using those daily solidified that desire. Not only does using the same style, the Gresham, create cohesiveness on the main level, I just really love our kitchen cabinets. They may not be custom, but they are durable and high quality. They receive a furniture-quality finish when they are painted. It really takes a lot for them to show any sort of wear, and our kitchen still looks brand new.
When browsing through the KraftMaid color options I was immediately drawn to Midnight. It’s an inky blue that speaks to our dining room walls and feels interesting yet timeless. There could be concern that the dark color would be a bit too, well, dark, but this room gets lots of light from a large, west-facing window, and there are other elements that will keep the space fresh and airy. It’s all about the mix.
I wanted a mix of closed and open storage, not only to be able to highlight some pretty things, but to allow some breathing room between all of the dark color. The two glass-front cabinets will get something fun inside, and the glass gives the illusion of more space. Just like the kitchen, taking the cabinets all the way to the ceiling maximizes the small, narrow space and also draws your eye up. The higher storage will be perfect for off season pool items, less used cleaning products, and entertaining pieces. Are the top cabinets very high? Yes, but there is also a cabinet that’s the perfect size for a step ladder.
The window nook boasted a few drawers with a seat and a shelf that was never used before. I still loved the drawer and seat idea, but we also added cabinets above the window. By simply pressing on the door they hinge open: another example of maximizing space and function.
Functionally speaking, the large utility cabinet when you first walk in is perfect for cleaning supplies. It came with a rack to hang brooms and mops and Micah put an outlet inside for the Dyson stick to charge: convenient yet hidden. One of the hardest things was figuring out a great layout that still had some symmetry. My traditionalist heart needs symmetry. The big, farmhouse sink gave us the perfect opportunity to create a little platform for Hank’s food and water bowls. The symmetrical cabinets on either side have pull out bins for dog food and a laundry hamper for cleaning clothes, clothes too dirty to wait to come off upstairs, and the kitchen towels at the end of each day.
I love how much the cabinets add, and I know the other elements will only continue to make this a space I’m happy to spend time in. We’ve got some more filler pieces and a corner cabinet to go. Then it will be time for countertops, wallpaper and paint, fixtures, styling, and finally reveal! I can’t wait to show you the finished room!
Do you love the idea of a more colorful laundry space, or do you prefer something more neutral and calm?

I love the color!beautiful. I’m in “camp colorful” for laundry rooms. They’re dreary enough after all and we spend a great deal of time in them.
