After revealing the sunroom and sharing the details of the nursery area, today I’d like to hit on my favorite spot in the space: the living area. When I began concepting the room I knew I needed a space to work and a space for Domino, but this area in between has been a nice little surprise. Because of the length of the room, it was important to break it up into zones. Taking the same principles used in open concept homes, we divided the room up using furniture while keeping the palette cohesive and the flow smooth.
Rugs are one of the best ways to designate spaces. This room is long and narrow, so finding the right size rug was going to be nearly impossible. My advice for those odd-shaped spaces is having a carpet cut and bound. Then you can get the exact size you need. I simply taped out what visually looked best with painters tape and then measured that. Ideally you want 12-18″ of floor showing between the rug and the wall. This blue and cream broadloom from Karastan adds such a fresh feel to the floor perfect for a nursery and is so soft underfoot. Plus, being 100% wool means no smelly chemicals around the baby.
Because our kids are spaced out Xander is seven and Milly is four and a half I really wanted this room to feel welcome for all. Motherhood with your first baby includes many quiet moments rocking that sweet little one in peace, but that’s not typically the case your second or third time around. I wanted to create an environment that encouraged the others to spend time with us and give them places to relax too.
The burgundy chairs from All Modern were one of the first items I sourced for the space. After confirming the wallpaper choice I pulled the trigger on a pair without even knowing how they would work in here. That’s not something I would typically do, but I thought they would be so great against the wallpaper. Sometimes you have to go with your gut – if you love something you’ll find a way to make it work. They are incredibly soft and deep, and the price point is so good for what you get. You can often find Xander in one after school, doing a little homework and telling me about his day.
This is Milly’s favorite spot. She loves to color and draw, so I make sure there is always plenty of paper and coloring books along with colored pencils. Some pillows on the floor make great cushions for her to rest on.
The coffee table was a happy accident. Micah’s cousin is an even bigger hunter than myself, and we are often texting back and forth things we have found. Several years ago one of us sent the other this coffee table I don’t remember who found it and Sam picked it up for her basement. I didn’t realize until the space had finally started to come together that I’d need a coffee table, and in a last minute plea I borrowed this one. It’s perfect in size, and the added texture is nice. Speaking of nice, Sam thought it looked great in here too and let me keep it!

I wish I could take credit for the fireplace mantle, but I can’t. Remember I told you my dear friend, Laura, helped me pull all of this together? Well, we had Domino’s four day check up, and Laura had come over to help me style. I had to leave and came back to this. I think I may have cried hormones because I loved it so much. Those little animals and the house are so sweet without feeling too juvenile. The mantle has life and beautiful interest.

In front of the fireplace, in the most cozy of gliders, is where you can find me feeding Domino and Netflix binging. With Milly I was too afraid to order something online and settled for a glider I found locally. I am really glad I took a chance this time. The Mod Nod Glider is classic and cozy without being bulky. The material wipes up really nicely and it’s comfy but still easy to get up and out of without waking the sleeping baby in your arms. A side table for water and baby supplies and a basket full of blankets and extra pillows for nursing are musts.

And then there’s Domino’s favorite area. As she’s grown I can’t believe she’s almost three months old she’s spending more and more time laying here and taking in the little animals. Milly loves to get out the toys from the basket and show her all of the pretty things she’s been given.
There are so many wonderful pieces in this part of the room, but a last minute addition is probably my favorite. Sam, the hunter? She gifted Domino a domino. That old Avon bottle is the cutest nod to her name, but what’s really special is the fact that it has three and five dots. We feel pretty complete since Domino has made us a family of five with our three little ones…
Let me know if I missed anything you’d like to know more about!

This room is stunning and I’m in love with so many of your choices. Did you choose this location for the nursery for it’s proximity to your master? And will this stay her room or do you see her moving in with her sister as they both get older? Currently helping a friend plan for baby number three and they have one of each right now. This series of posts has been so helpful – as the idea of a newborn with either child just wouldn’t work at their ages – she is toying with the idea of making a beautiful but temporary space for Baby #3 in her office (attached to master) until he/she is old enough to join their sibling. Thanks for the inspiration and beautiful work always.

Yes to all of this! I liked the closeness to us (the doors are right next to our bed) and Domino will move in with Milly eventually. I’m guessing sometime after a year but trying to be flexible with that. Thanks for reading, Loly!

Gwen, every nook and cranny was so well thought out. The chairs, the lighting, but I absolutely adore the domino. Be still my heart….

Every detail is perfect! But I also love that you kept the sink right there. Have you been using it a lot?

This room is so cozy and functional and beautiful! Wish I was as brave as you to do wallpaper such as yours. I always play the “safe” card! I’m curious! How is the sink in the room working out?

I love having a sink in there! I drink lots of water so easy for fill ups, art project clean ups, hand washing….

This room never ceases to amaze me! The colour combinations are something I could never have imagined in abstract, and yet they work so well in this space. I really love how you have pulled everything together – and not just the colours, but the multiple functions of the room too. It really is a triumph.

This room is beautiful! Curious, did you paint the tile surrounding the fireplace yourselves? What color did you use?

Thank you so much! It’s Farrow and Ball’s off black.
