Sunroom Details: The Nursery

 

Wow, I can’t thank you enough for your kind and encouraging comments on my last BULLET POINTS.  It’s good to hear you’re enjoying what I share and was nice to get some new ideas for posts as well.  And I was blown away by the responses to the start of our master bedroom refresh.  You all really like your king beds, and I can see why!

Today I wanted to go back to the sunroom makeover and get into more detail on the nursery side of the space.  As I mentioned here, we’ve used this space for almost 12 weeks, so sharing how it functions now as opposed to how I had hoped it would function makes more sense.

Typically the first thing people think about buying with a new baby is a crib.  Because it’s in a multipurpose space and can also be seen from our bedroom our bed is right next to the french doors I wanted it to be beautiful and sophisticated.  This modern Jenny Lind from The Land of Nod fits that bill perfectly.  I love the update on the classic style.  Unfortunately, this exact style is no longer available, but they have this pretty white one.  The lamp from Rejuvenation provides good light in the evening, and the white really pops against the striped paper.  I’ll talk more about that beautiful, blue Karastan carpet that we had cut into a rug when I talk about the family area, but I added the sheepskin because you can never have too many plush surfaces when you’re dealing with a baby’s space.   It’s great for Domino to lay on and feels so nice underfoot at 3am.

Second to the crib is a place to change the baby.  After seeing a few images with woven baskets as changing pads, I started searching for someone who sold them.  I came across this one by Design Dua and it brings such a pretty, natural feel to this corner.  Along with supporting fair compensation workers in Ghana, it’s something that can function as storage after Domino is out of diapers.  Sidenote, Freshly Picked moccasins are the best.  I loved them with Milly, and now they have newborn sizes – they actually stay on a newborn’s feet!  If you need a good baby gift, this is the ultimate.

Because we don’t have a closet for Domino, a dresser with loads of storage was important.  This piece has extra deep drawers.  Along with plenty of room for clothes and blankets, the small top drawers are velvet lined and have little compartments for jewelry – perfect for storing all of those headbands, bows, and binks.

A baby mobile doesn’t have to go over a crib.  This handmade brass one reflects the sun during evening diaper changes and will make for great decor anywhere in the house as Domino grows.

The classic, mushroom lamp is the go-to light in the middle of the night.  It is perfect for the nursery space because the button to turn it on is lit easy to find in the dark and by simply holding down the button you can dim the light.  Sadly, this lamp is being discontinued, but it’s on major sale right now – I’d highly recommend scooping it up if you’re wanting to add a touch of modern to any space.

Finally, I strongly suggest thinking outside the box for your baby supply needs.  It not only creates a more pleasant space, it also allows you to invest in pieces you’ll love long after the nursery stage.  A soap dispenser filled with hand sanitizer, a marble cup for q-tips, cotton balls in a thrifted bowl, diapers tucked inside a shagreen box: all of these things are a little bit of luxury in the midst of the mess, and pieces that will remind you of this sweet time when they function elsewhere in the years to come.
