It feels like we’ve come a long way in a week, and I’m now confident that this will get done with some time to get things really looking pretty by the final reveal.
This week Micah and his dad put all of the moulding up. We had his parents and grandma over for dinner and they all pitched in. At 86, Grandma Hefner was filling nail holes and had more energy to help than I did!
I wanted to do a simple treatment on the walls, but one that had strong impact. We went with this incredibly sleek, beautiful base mould and door casing from Metrie and then did a small screen mould to create the frames. The doors are a simple shaker that plays well against the moulding and more masculine/modern space. Micah wanted to do a recessed box to hold all of the media equipment, so my father-in-law built it out of MDF and then they framed it in and trimmed it out.
We don’t have space for a big bar, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little space to store some glasses and games and set out food and drinks.
We purchased three 12×15″ in-stock upper cabinets from Lowe’s and Micah and Milly 🙂 built a base to create a little custom dry bar.
Micah primed everything last night, and our favorite painter will be here this weekend to put one beautiful coat of Elephant’s Breath it doesn’t sound so beautiful, does it? But it is! We have an old sprayer and Micah gets by with priming, but at this point we leave the spray painting to the professionals.

In extra pretty news, the pillows have arrived, and the fabric is so beautiful. It will create such a wonderful juxtaposition against the dark, clean-lined furniture.

I I love Elephant’s Breath, at least what I have seen of it on the Farrow and Ball site and in blogs. I truly cannot take the risk of buying the Farrow and Ball paint right now because things look so different on the walls, and I don’t have a Farrow and Ball dealer around here. (It is very expensive to buy and if I am not happy with it, I would be stuck at that price!) I did a color match of it at the store, but ended up not using it because I just wasn’t sure if it was close enough to the F and B color. I can’t wait to see it on your walls! Dove Tale is another similar color I love. I hope to try both someday!

I always get a sample from them first. We don’t have a store near us either, but the samples aren’t expensive and come in the mail in just a few days usually. Then I know for sure if I like it before I commit.

Thanks Gwen, I will have to do that sometime with Farrow and Ball.

Wow, that molding is amazing! I cannot wait to see it painted! Farrow and Ball has the best paint names… My favorite is “arsenic” – totally pretty sounding, huh?

That moulding looks fantastic! I appreciate your hard work on that, I’ve been doing the same this week! I have some weird angle to figure out for the mitering, but mine’s almost done too. Amazing what a difference such a little thing makes! Love your fabric mix!

I thought elephant’s breath must be a Farrow & Ball paint color! Guess I was right. I wonder why they use such weird names – maybe because they really get your attention. I think they have a dead salmon color and maybe mouse’s back. Your room is looking great. I really like your fabric choices. They look so good together. I really just started liking animal prints lately. My favorites are the unnatural combinations like blue and white, and teal and cream, etc. I was talking about painting trim and my husband said, “what about the walls?” so maybe he’s going to paint the guest room walls by week 6!

Love this Gwen! 1) I love that you can photograph a windowless room and make it look amazing (I am still working on pictures outdoors!) and 2) where in the world did you get those baseboards?!?! They are beautiful!

Hi Gwen, I am looking into doing a similar molding design on my walls, and I’m curious about your spacing? Can you share the distance you decided on from the ceiling / floor, from each molding section to the next, and the measurements between the boxes in each set of three? Thanks so much.
[email protected] says
I believe we did about 6″ with the spacing. I recommend trying one out to get an idea of what looks good for your room and then going from there. Good luck!
