Happy 2020! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. The new year has been off to a really great start, and one of my favorite parts so far has been an amazing collaboration I’ve been working on with my blog friend: Chris Loves Julia. Last year some people commented that they would love to see us work together on a project, and we both thought, “let’s do it!” We had followers on Instagram submit their bedrooms to us for consideration, and it was not easy to choose. There were so many deserving people.
After lots of contemplation, we will be heading to Arizona, with the help of our wonderful sponsor, Lowe’s, the end of next month for a weekend makeover! Cori and her family live in a mid-century home in the desert that has basically been untouched for years. Their bedroom has great potential – a nice size, a large arched window. More on the family to come.
Julia and I have both created our own take of the space. Then we’ll be combining our designs for a room that is a great mix of Chris Loves Julia and The Makerista, all with Cori and Chris’ personal style and home in mind. I don’t do a lot of mid-century design living in a colonial, so this was a challenge, but I’m so happy with the results. The carpet is definitely the first thing that needs some help. I love to incorporate period appropriate finishes whenever possible, and this is a perfect opportunity to do so. Traditionally, homes of this style would have been floored in cork. Lowes has a great option that is true to the era.
I gleaned a lot from mid-century Italian and Parisian design and kept the color palette calm and earthy to compliment the beautiful desert. I love the idea of updating the wood paneling with some clean slates and painting them Sherwin Williams Meadow Sage. I would paint all of the rest of the walls, doors, and trim Sherwin Williams Filmy Green. These both have a muddy green undertone. Filmy Green has depth while still feeling light and fresh.
The window wall has a wonderful track system. The curtains could use some freshening up so I would use these velvet ones. Tip: always check reviews for photos. The color is softer and more sage than what the product images portray. Along with using the new curtains on the existing track, I would purchase some extra panels to DIY a headboard in a clean, modern shape. Rugs and bedding can be dealbreakers in any bedroom. A shag is mid-century appropriate, wonderful under foot, and the color won’t be too fussy with little kids and life. A great mattress is crucial to good sleep and soft sheets are a little detail that make slipping into bed at the end of the day all the better.
There is no overhead lighting in this room, so adding in more light is important. I would do two pendants over the nightstands using my puck light hack to create statement lighting without any electrical work. A lamp on the dresser, console, and a task lamp for the chair‘s side table will create more form and function in the space. While this is Cori and Chris’ room, anyone with little kids understands how the space needs to function to house the whole family. Cori asked specifically for a place to bring back their tradition of bedtime stories. With several seating options, like the sleek bench and sculptural chairs we’d spray a rich navy, there’s room for everyone.
The accessories are where there’s room for fun. Cori loves to thrift a girl after my own heart so I know that the styling will be a great way to bring life and personal touches to the room. Lots of pottery pieces are appropriate for mid-century desert. The art really packs a punch and feels fresh while still being in line with the period of the house. You know I had to throw the bust in, and the marble table makes a chic little plant stand while bringing in some wonderful contrast and texture. Cori’s descriptions for the room were clean, relaxing, and “a little edgy in a design sort of way.” I think we’ve accomplished that below. The fun in all of this is the fact that Julia has created a whole other design, and I can’t wait to see her spin on the space! Head on over to see Julia’s design here!

So interesting to see the two different takes, and I think the basics are so similar (nightstands-obvs, neutral bedding, warm wood tones, mod fabric-covered headboard). Can’t wait to see your two styles blend along with the homeowner’s wishes!

Yes! It was fun to see the ideas and items we were in synce on!

Oh I love this vision! The cork floor is sort of a genius thing.

I love your design. It’s suited for the style of house. I always felt that the architecture should dictate your design. And adding a sprinkling of some modern items keeps it fresh.

Thanks so much, Mary!

Love the idea of slats on the paneling rather than just a coat of paint! Very pretty! Can’t wait to see the process and end result!

Me too! I don’t know that we’ll realistically have time to do it in a few days, but I wanted to put it in this mood board for fun, if nothing else! 😉

Congrats to this family! How fun!
What do you use to create your design board above?

I love your blog and always look forward to reading it and seeing your ideas come to life, but find myself disappointed because you don’t seem to write very often. I don’t know how busy your life is but I imagine with young children it is jam packed with responsibilities. Might it be time to fold the blog and move on to other things?

Lynn, I’m sorry to disappoint. Life has been very full and something has had to give. I’m hopeful that with time I’ll be blogging more again, but my family and being a stay-at-home mom in this season is my number one priority. I don’t plan on stopping The Makerista at all.
