Entertaining is something I’m still learning to do well, but one aspect that draws me to try again and again is the decor. I love planning a theme and finding the right pieces to make for a pretty party. Unlike decorating a room, decorating for a party is fleeting. There is less pressure to “get it right” and more reason to just have fun with it. I thought today I’d take you through the process of how I planned the decor for my Mother’s Day brunch and give you some sources for what I used.
The easiest way to start is to find inspiration. That can be an idea for example, for Milly’s second birthday it was strawberries or it can be an actual item. This time around it was a tablecloth from Couleur Nature. I loved how old world it felt, and I knew I had some pieces that would look great with it. The blue goblets I thrifted a few years ago were a definite match.
I liked the idea of a relaxed, french country vibe, and that’s definitely what the tablecloth, seagrass placemats and linen napkins evoke. A market tote on each seat for a takeaway is great for any mom and feels fresh in a navy linen. Pairing these more casual elements against the dramatic walls of the dining room and the gorgeous blooms by Emmy Ray bring a bit more of my personality and taste to the event. If I wanted to keep things relaxed simple pots of lavender would be pretty down the center of the table. But I like to add some drama any chance I get!
Buffets can be tricky. Planning things out in advance is a big help. I just put a gingham tea towel down for some color and texture and then layered white serving pieces in. When in doubt, go all white. It’s clean, simple, and really makes the food shine.
