I’m not sure if you’re where I’m at physically or mentally, but here in Kansas City and in my head, I am ready for spring! We’ve had a few days in the 60’s the last several weeks, but today it’s snowing. It’s been a long winter. I’ve kind of taken off the beginning of this year, not making much and really focusing on personal relationships and keeping our home. It’s been a wonderful time for family, friends, and fellowship, but I have been ready to wet my creative whistle again.
Last year my friend, Justin, brought me up to where he lives in Des Moines, Iowa to shoot some dresses. It was a fun project and also a great opportunity to work with a handful of the creatives he loves up there. Shelly of Shelly Sarver Designs did the florals, and it was so lovely working with her. She is not only creative, she is kind and funny too. A few weeks ago Justin was asking what we could do next, and he suggested bringing Shelly down to my house for another chance to work together. I was on board!
Spring makes me so excited for green and flowers. Whether it’s Mother’s Day, Easter, Passover…all of these celebrations inspire me to bring as much life into them as possible. There wasn’t a ton of planning for this, but I kind of gave Shelly an idea of what I like, and she showed up with buckets of flowers. She knew I had a good amount of vases and vessels. She started with some simple bowls on the table with individual white flowers arranged inside them using metal floral frogs. When we started talking about the buffet, I mentioned all the blue and white I had, and she said, “just start bringing everything you can in here.” I collected every vessel I had – even my umbrella stand, perfect for some delphinium – and started arranging. I put on the white linen tablecloth for a fresh look, and when she started placing in some peaches and oranges in the blue and white, I knew I should use the apricot colored plates I found thrifting to tie the two together. She also filled the bud vases with blue flowers on the table between the white arrangements to speak to all the pottery.
Anytime I share blue and white people always wonder where I’ve collected it from. The truth is, every single one of these pieces has been thrifted. It’s something I’ve seen while thrifting for years. I just kept running into it at every store! One day I decided to start collecting it. If you can’t easily find blue and white thrifting, I’ve rounded up some pieces I’ve found online that are beautiful. Some will ship to you in two days!
