Spring used to be the season I looked forward to the least, but gardening has changed that! There is nothing more thrilling than longer days, warming weather, and the chance to see new life spring forth daily. Half the fun is the planning, and I created this little corner of the deck to do just that. From plotting out beds to potting up plants, I’ve got a pretty space to take in inspiration and get my hands dirty. I headed to At Home to gather some pieces to help freshen things up and here are my tips for making your outdoor spaces feel as inviting and comfortable as your indoor rooms.
1. PUT A RUG DOWN An outdoor rug defines the space and brings comfort. It immediately makes it feel like a room! Just like inside, consider the footprint and furniture to get the size right. Ideally you want 8-12″ between the rug and the ends of the deck and at least the front legs of the furniture to sit on the rug.
2. SOFTEN UP Elements like rugs, pillows, linens, and upholstered pieces bring softness and comfort to an outdoor space. Don’t be afraid to bring indoor pieces outside for an afternoon, like cushy benches, tableclothes, or maybe even a tufted chair.
2. PATTERNS AND TEXTURES MATTER A tablecloth is a great layer of warmth and texture. I love to think outside the box and check the bedding section. This king top sheet was budget friendly and has the sweetest little pattern!
3. ADD OLD WORLD CHARM Terra cotta pots are classic but also very on trend right now. I picked up a bunch of these with the scallop detail, and they add such charm and interest.
4. DON’T FORGET THE GLOW From overhead to task and ambient lighting, how the space is lit can make or break evening entertaining and relaxing. Candles add such a wonderful element outdoors. This blush colored pillar in the etched glass hurricane (glass is trending!) is a great centerpiece without obstructing the view and gives a wonderful glow at night.
5. THE MORE GREEN THE BETTER It might be an assumption that if you’re outside you’re surrounded by plants, but this covered part of the deck is surrounded by hard surfaces and little life. Bringing in potted plants can add a lot of life and depth to your outdoor spaces, and color too! Don’t be afraid to mix some faux with your fresh. The faux flowering branches will be in bloom all summer long and stand up to the summer heat – no watering required.
6. DON’T GIVE UP FUNCTION FOR FORM Having a place to coral hats and tools at the end of a day outdoors is important. The bamboo wall hook takes storage vertical, leaving more room for plants!
